OZ Minerals said on Monday that operations at its Prominent Hill copper and gold mine in South Australia were suspended after the death of an underground worker over the weekend.

The 43-year-old man was "killed instantly by a machine" on Sunday, state police said in a brief statement.

Andrew Cole, CEO of OZ Minerals, said that at this very difficult time, Byrnecut (mining contractor) and OZ Minerals are providing support to workers' families. Our first priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone at the scene.

The company also said it was assisting the state police and security services in their investigations.

The miner expects Prominent Hill to produce as much as 70000 tons of copper and 135000 ounces of gold in fiscal year 2021.
