SHANGHAI, Jul 22 (SMM) - The lithium battery industry is booming in 2021. The new energy industry is rising rapidly under the background of stimulus policies and the global electrification trend, driving the entire industry chain into a stage of vigorous development.

As one of the most important basic raw materials for new energy vehicles, lithium resources saw short supply and price increase at the end of 2020 and stable prices amid recovering supply in Q2 2021. The supply of lithium resources has become an important influencing factor for the future development of new energy. How will the customer base in the industry chain, including downstream precursors, materials, batteries, automobiles, and upstream nickel, cobalt and lithium raw material manufacturers, balance the increase in production and the supply of raw materials?

SMM has integrated the upstream and downstream enterprises in the lithium battery industry chain and conducted on-site surveys on lithium battery related companies.  

From July 19 to 23, SMM New Energy Division Director Wang Tian and marketing consultant Yu Lei led the SMM staff and members of the delegation to visit raw material enterprises of lithium battery industry in Qinghai, with the purpose of facilitating closer and in-depth cooperation as well as more effective and sustainable communications.

The delegation members come from Jiangxi Longente Environmental Protection Equipment Co., Ltd., Binteer Control Equipment Co., Ltd., Hangzhou Shangtuo Environmental Technology Co., Ltd., Xiangtan Huibo Centrifuge Co., Ltd., and Zhejiang Dongou Filter Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

About Minmetals Salt Lake Co., Ltd

Minmetals Salt Lake Co. Ltd is registered in Mangya City, Haixi, Qinghai Province. The production plant lies in Yiliping Salt Lake in the middle of the Qaidam Basin. The office base is located in Xining City, and its wholly-owned subsidiary Minmetals (Qilian) Development Co., Ltd. is in Qilian county, Haibei, Qinghai Province.

The company's main businesses include the exploitation of lithium and potassium resources, as well as the production and sales of lithium carbonate, potash fertiliser, and other products.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by the management of Minmetals Salt Lake, including Chairman Hou Zhaofei, Deputy General Manager Ma Pile, Assistant General Manager Tang Faman, General Manager Mu Dongping of the Business Operation Department, and Director Zan Chao of the Quality Inspection Centre, and listened to the presentation regarding the company’s business development.

Minmetals Salt Lake Co., Ltd. was established in September 2009 by China Minmetals through the strategic cooperation with Qinghai Province to comprehensively develop the resources in Yiliping Salt Lake.

The delegation later visited the exhibition hall of Minmetals Salt Lake Co., Ltd. to gain an in-depth understanding of the company's development history and industry overview.

The company keeps developing and expanding its high-quality customer base. Due to unremitting efforts, its market position and shares has been continuously increasing.

Technology Exchange

The delegation members conducted in-depth exchanges with Minmetals Salt Lake on its core competitiveness and future development plans.

The company said that the lithium hydroxide market has intensively focused on whether lithium hydroxide can be extracted directly from salt lakes.

Major manufacturers have made large investments. High-grade nickel materials will also dominate the growth of ternary materials. Some salt lake companies are studying the direct extraction of lithium hydroxide from brine, which is still under research.

In terms of whether the recovery rate of lithium extraction from connate brine is really high, Minmetals Salt Lake stated that the current results of Minmetals' lithium extraction from connate brine have been identified, and technological breakthroughs have also been achieved. The recovery rate of traditional lithium extraction from concentrated old brine is generally around 35%, and the comprehensive recovery rate of lithium extraction from connate brine can reach 70% without the drying process.

Regarding whether salt lake will suspend production in winter, Minmetals Salt Lake said that winter actually has no significant impact on lithium extraction production, but some companies’ production will be affected by local natural gas restrictions, as citizens have the priority of using natural gas.

Solis Minerals ha iniciado la perforación diamantina en su Proyecto de Litio Campo Grande, en el Valle del Litio Araçuaí-Salinas, Brasil. La empresa planea cinco sondajes con un total aproximado de 1.000 m, con profundidades previstas de hasta 200 m, para evaluar pegmatitas de litio a lo largo de un corredor de 500 m. Los objetivos se basan en anomalías geoquímicas multielemento coincidentes en superficie y en resultados históricos de perforación con barreno. Los trabajos históricos de Rio Tinto y el posterior mapeo y trabajo geoquímico de Solis definieron los objetivos. Solis también ha mapeado un nuevo enjambre de pegmatitas con tres zonas de afloramiento coherentes entre los sondajes planificados DHCG-001 y DHCG-004. El programa evaluará la continuidad, la geometría y el potencial de litio de las pegmatitas bajo la superficie, comenzando donde las pegmatitas mapeadas coinciden con anomalías geoquímicas. Solis señala que la geología y la geoquímica de Campo Grande son comparables a las del Proyecto de Litio Colina de PLS Group, situado a unos 100 km al suroeste. Por otra parte, Solis ha completado siete sondajes en su Proyecto de Litio Mandacaru, en Brasil, con resultados de ensayo pendientes.

Charger Metals ha movilizado una segunda plataforma de perforación a su proyecto de litio Lake Johnston, en Australia Occidental, como parte de un programa de 10.000 m orientado al crecimiento de recursos. Actualmente operan plataformas de diamantina y de circulación inversa en el depósito de litio Medcalf, y la perforación de circulación inversa comenzó hace poco más de una semana. El programa duplicará los metros perforados en Medcalf. La perforación apunta a extensiones y relleno en la estimación de recursos minerales inferidos de Medcalf, de 10,6 Mt con una ley del 1 % de Li₂O. La perforación ha definido con mayor precisión el objetivo de exploración Medcalf West, de 3 a 5 Mt con leyes del 1 al 1,4 % de Li₂O. El programa también busca proporcionar testigos de diamantina para ensayos metalúrgicos y geotécnicos. Tras la reciente mejora de recursos de Medcalf, que elevó el Li₂O contenido en un 34 %, el directorio de Charger se ha comprometido a realizar un estudio de alcance del proyecto Lake Johnston. El recurso actual se asienta sobre una malla de perforación predominantemente de 40 m x 80 m, que incluye 10.936 m de perforación a un costo de 32 dólares por tonelada de Li₂O contenido. El programa está totalmente financiado con la venta del proyecto de litio Bynoe a Core Lithium por 3,75 millones de dólares en efectivo, recibidos el 17 de julio de 2026. Lake Johnston se encuentra a 450 km al este de Perth, en la provincia de Yilgarn, a unos 70 km del proyecto de litio Earl Grey, donde Covalent Lithium inició la extracción y la puesta en marcha en marzo de 2024.

El 23 de septiembre, Savannah Resources recaudó 30 millones de dólares para su proyecto de litio Barroso en Portugal, mediante 408 millones de acciones a 0,055 libras por acción, incluidos 11,2 millones de dólares procedentes de acuerdos de suscripción con accionistas principales. Sumados a los 15,5 millones de dólares en efectivo disponibles, los fondos se destinarán a la fabricación de equipos de largo plazo, obras de caminos de acceso, contratación EPCM, ingeniería de planta, permisos y derechos de uso del suelo. El estudio de factibilidad definitivo de la fase uno de Barroso, previsto para julio de 2026, contempla una vida útil de 14 años con una producción de 183.000 toneladas anuales de óxido de litio, con una ley del 5,5 %, basado en un precio de 1.788 dólares por tonelada, lo que generaría un EBITDA de 3.200 millones de dólares, un flujo de caja libre de 1.900 millones de dólares y un valor actual neto después de impuestos de 913 millones de dólares. El yacimiento contiene 39 millones de toneladas con una ley del 1,05 % de Li2O, equivalentes a 411.900 toneladas de litio contenido, lo que lo convierte en el mayor recurso de espodumeno de roca dura de Europa. La financiación impulsa una de las pocas fuentes de litio de roca dura a gran escala en desarrollo fuera de China, vinculada a cadenas de suministro africanas y sudamericanas, contribuyendo a los objetivos de diversificación de materias primas críticas de la UE.
