India's gold imports fell to their lowest level in more than a decade in 2020 as the epidemic hit demand and logistics, while rising gold prices left buyers in India, the second-largest gold consumer, on the sidelines.

India's overseas purchases fell to 275.5 tonnes last year, the lowest since 2009, compared with data from the World Gold Council, according to people familiar with the matter.

Indian gold consumption fell for the second year in a row as record high prices damped demand. At the same time, the reduction in flights has also restricted imports due to virus-related traffic controls.
