Primary aluminium inventories fell 60,000 mt over weekend

SMM data showed that stocks across eight consumption areas in China, including SHFE warrants, decreased 60,000 mt from last Thursday April 16 to 1.435 million mt as of Monday April 20.

SHANGHAI, Apr 20 (SMM) – Social inventories of primary aluminium ingots continued to decline over the weekend, as demand remained strong.

 

SMM data showed that stocks across eight consumption areas in China, including SHFE warrants, decreased 60,000 mt from last Thursday April 16 to 1.435 million mt as of Monday April 20.

 

Details:

Wuxi, Jiangsu – 604,000 mt

Shanghai – 171,000 mt

Nanhai, Guangdong – 306,000 mt

Gongyi, Henan – 133,000 mt

Hangzhou, Zhejiang – 141,000 mt

Tianjin – 57,000 mt

Linyi, Shandong – 10,000 mt

Chongqing –13,000 mt

However, the continuation of inventory buildup exceeding expectations in China will weigh on domestic aluminum prices. Meanwhile, tightened invoicing regulations may lead to structural tightness in spot cargo, and the weakening spot market further limits the upside room for domestic aluminum prices. Close attention should be paid to the potential turning point in China's social inventory, which could drive a rebound and rise in aluminum prices.
