The previous contract offered the company a one-time payment of 9.8 million pesos ($14100), an increase of 1.2 per cent in real wages. Codelco then raised the amount by 43 per cent to 14 million pesos, increased real wages by 1.2 per cent, and hoped workers would sign 27-month contracts.

But the current situation is that if the final round of mediation fails to bear fruit, the unions will go on strike.
