Iron ore futures were firmer today. The DCE most-traded I2701 contract settled at 691 yuan/mt, up 1.77% from the previous session. Qingdao port spot prices rose by around 4-6 yuan/mt on average. Traders quoted in line with the market and sold as usual. Mill inquiries were few and mills remained cautious. Spot trading was reasonable.
The macro backdrop has shifted. Funds that had been long energy and chemicals and short ferrous have been closing positions, lifting ferrous prices. Iron ore futures have now risen for two consecutive sessions.
On the supply side, SMM data showed total iron ore stocks at 10 major ports at 104.68 million mt on 5 November, up 630,000 mt. Concentrate and lump stocks rose slightly, while fines and pellet stocks edged down.
On the demand side, average daily hot metal output was 2.3573 million mt on 4 November, down 4,800 mt. Production curbs during the heating season and seasonally weaker construction steel demand keep hot metal output under downward pressure. Mills continue to press for lower coke prices, and expectations of a third round of coke price cuts are building, which may ease mill cost pressure.
Weaker short positioning and expected coke price cuts are easing pressure along the chain and supporting iron ore. However, falling hot metal output and a slight build in port stocks limit the upside. Iron ore prices are likely to be slightly firm in the near term, an upgrade from yesterday’s range-bound view.
