In October 2026, manganese ore inventories at major domestic ports exhibited an operational pattern characterized by "stable total volume and regional divergence." From the end of September to the end of October, total port inventories fluctuated within a narrow range around 6 million tonnes, with varying performances across individual ports. Tianjin Port, as the dominant hub, saw inventories rise first and then decline, while Guangxi and other smaller northern ports experienced structural increases and decreases. This indicates that overall market supply and demand remained in a state of dynamic equilibrium.

On a port-by-port basis, Tianjin Port's inventories accounted for an absolute majority, with its trend highly resonating with total inventory movements. Since mid-to-late October, demand in the northern market has shown signs of recovery, and inventories experienced healthy drawdowns, potentially influenced by periodic navigation restrictions and transportation adjustments. Meanwhile, inventories at Qinzhou Port in the south continued to climb. Despite ample manganese ore arrivals in South China, the digestion rate remained relatively slow, gradually intensifying inventory pressure. Inventories at Caofeidian Port increased consecutively, whereas at Fangchenggang Port, overall inventories remained low and stable.

In summary, the core characteristic of manganese ore inventories in October was "declines in the north, increases in the south, with total volume remaining stable." The destocking at Tianjin Port offset the inventory builds at Qinzhou and Caofeidian, preventing significant fluctuations in total inventories.

Entering November, this trend is expected to continue, but the magnitude of destocking will depend on the shipment pace and arrival volume at northern ports. Considering that November marks the winter stocking season in northern China, outbound demand from Tianjin Port is expected to remain robust, potentially driving further inventory reductions. With its relatively small base, Caofeidian Port will have limited impact on total volume, reflecting more of a localized redistribution of northern cargo. Arrival and outbound shipment rates at southern ports are expected to remain relatively stable, posing no significant variable.

Overall, the core logic for port manganese ore inventories in November remains "declines in the north, stability in the south, and total volume destocking." Driven by the continuous destocking at Tianjin Port, the average monthly inventory level is expected to shift downward, providing some support for manganese ore price stabilization. However, regional structural differences will persist, and the destocking magnitude at Tianjin Port and the arrival pace at Qinzhou Port will remain the key variables determining the final inventory level.

[SMM Chromium Flash] Sylvania’s Thaba JV Supplements Mine Feed with Third-Party Chrome Ore Amid Mining Shortfalls
Sylvania Platinum's Thaba Joint Venture (JV) continued to supplement its mined run-of-mine (ROM) feed with third-party material in Q1 FY2027, as mining volumes and ore quality from its JV partner, Limberg Mining Company (LMC), remained below plan. The company reported approximately 32,888 mt of third-party ROM material, grading 27.9% Cr₂O₃ and 0.83 g/t in 4E platinum group metals (PGMs), in its attributable ROM feed figures for the quarter. Sylvania said the additional material helped sustain longer plant operating periods and more consistent throughput, while its higher chrome grade contributed positively to chrome recovery and product yield. Attributable ROM throughput increased 30% quarter on quarter to 63,703 mt, while combined plant feed rose 24% to 75,268 mt. The company described third-party sourcing as an interim measure and said it was engaging with LMC on action plans to improve mining performance, ROM feed quality and supply terms.

[SMM Chromium Flash] Sylvania’s Thaba JV Chrome Concentrate Production Rises 67% QoQ to 29,799 mt
Sylvania Platinum reported attributable chrome concentrate production of 29,799 mt from its Thaba Joint Venture (JV) in Q1 FY2027, representing a 67% quarter-on-quarter increase from 17,889 mt in Q4 FY2026. The improvement was supported by better processing plant stability, longer operating hours and higher throughput, alongside the sourcing of third-party run-of-mine (ROM) ore to supplement the JV's mined feed. The JV's overall chrome product mass yield increased to 39.59% from 29.50% in the previous quarter, an improvement of approximately 10 percentage points. Sylvania said the improved processing performance provides a stronger operational foundation, although mining volumes and ROM feed quality from its JV partner, Limberg Mining Company, remained below plan. The company continues to target attributable chrome concentrate production of 110,000–140,000 mt for FY2027.
