Tin Market Midday Commentary – October 19, 2026
1. Price Review
SMM #1 tin was quoted at 378,400-381,500 yuan/mt today, with an average price of 379,950 yuan/mt, up 1,400 yuan/mt from the previous trading day.
The most-traded SHFE tin contract rebounded quickly after the opening this morning. The most-traded SN2611 contract closed at 379,770 yuan/mt in the morning session, up 2,400 yuan (+0.64%). Full-day trading volume reached 115,948 lots, with open interest at 31,721 lots, down 426 lots on the day, showing a pattern of consolidation on shrinking volume.
LME tin edged up in tandem. LME tin 3M was last quoted at $50,605/mt, up $410 (+0.82%), holding above the $50,000 mark but trading close to it. Trading volume was 69 lots, and the SHFE/LME price ratio rebounded to around 7.51.
2. Price Logic
The macro front is mixed, with easing tightening expectations serving as the main driver of today's futures recovery. Fed Chairman Warsh stated clearly in his Bangkok speech last Friday that he "will not prejudge the outcome of the meeting," effectively abandoning the forward guidance strategy. Market bets on a rate hike at the October 27-28 meeting plunged from about 27% to below 15%, and Goldman Sachs further expects the Fed to stay on hold in October, with the next hike landing in December.
On the other side, energy inflation risks continue to accumulate. Ukraine resumed attacks on Russian refineries, and bipartisan US lawmakers proposed a bill to block the US-Russia diesel supply agreement. WTI rose 2.97% to $98.94/bbl and Brent rose 3.39% to $107.58/bbl, both hitting five-month highs. The US plan to release up to 17 million barrels from strategic reserves and the IEA's accelerated release of 100 million barrels still failed to cap oil prices. The support from energy costs for sticky inflation means that the pricing of "higher for longer" rates is hard to fully unwind.
3. Spot Market
Trading activity in the spot market was subdued. Downstream users focused on digesting inventories and arranging production, making small purchases at lows as needed. Suppliers maintained their stance of holding prices firm, with most reporting tight cargo availability and reluctance to sell at low prices. Markets outside China were generally stable. On the ore side, production in Africa was normal. On the tin ingot side, Indonesian exports were steady, with demand mainly fulfilled through long-term contracts. LME trading remained thin (only 69 lots today), and ex-China pricing continued to follow macro developments and SHFE trends, with limited independent drivers.
4. Comprehensive Outlook
Overall, prices have retested the 380,000 yuan mark after two consecutive days of recovery, but the forces driving further gains are not sufficient. On the macro front, while October rate hike expectations have cooled significantly, the market's pricing center has not shifted toward easing. Instead, the focus has switched from "when to hike" to "how long rates will stay high." With December hike expectations still in place, repeated shifts in data and official remarks are more of a periodic disturbance to futures, only mildly stimulating fluctuations rather than providing directional drivers. Market sentiment remains cautious overall. Support from fundamentals is also weakening at the margin: the AI-related demand narrative has softened from earlier, and the valuation premium of "computing power metal" has narrowed somewhat. On the spot side, downstream users had already restocked intensively during the earlier sharp decline and are now shifting to digesting inventories and purchasing as needed, with demand follow-through not timely enough. On the supply side, performance remains mild overall. The supportive forces from ore tightness and smelting maintenance are still in place, but without new supply disruptions, upside elasticity is insufficient. Under this setup, SHFE tin is expected to consolidate around the 380,000 yuan mark and LME tin around the $50,000 level, with the price center swinging as information is released. Key factors to watch include Fed officials' remarks and changes in December meeting expectations, the US dollar index and US Treasury yields, the extent to which the Russia-Ukraine and Middle East situations push up oil prices, Indonesia's export pace, and domestic social inventory destocking.
