[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] Finished Products and Raw Materials Pull Back in Tandem, Cost Pressure Eases, Stainless Steel Smelting Profits Hold Steady This week, stainless steel finished product and raw material prices pulled back in tandem, with steel mill profits basically stable and pulling back slightly. Based on the 304 cold-rolled category, the profit margin calculated from current raw material costs recovered to 1.42%, achieving positive profitability. However, dragged by previously purchased high-priced raw material inventory, the profit margin calculated from inventory costs remained at -2.54%, and the pressure from destocking on actual profitability has not yet been fully lifted. This week, nickel pig iron raw material prices fell notably. Under macro headwinds, SHFE nickel moved lower, and NPI market sentiment turned pessimistic. Demand declined amid expectations for production cuts at stainless steel mills, and the purchase price for stainless steel scrap was lowered during the week, further pressuring high-grade NPI prices. With the market broadly bearish, prices consolidated on a subdued note. As of this Friday, the tax-inclusive delivered price of Indonesian high-grade NPI with 10-12% grade in China fell by 17.5 yuan/nickel unit to 1,022.5 yuan/nickel unit. This week, stainless steel scrap prices fell. Under macro headwinds, SS futures declined notably, and steel mills lowered guidance prices for finished products, with spot prices pulling back and exerting direct pressure. High-grade NPI and high-carbon ferrochrome fell in tandem, and steel mill purchase prices were lowered, making it difficult for stainless steel scrap to move independently. Although the cost advantage of stainless steel scrap over high-grade NPI widened, unresolved tax invoice issues, cautious year-end purchasing by steel mills, and continued declines in production schedules kept demand weak, making it hard to reverse the downtrend. In the short term, prices are expected to continue consolidating on a subdued note. As of this Friday, the tax-exclusive price of mainstream 304 off-cuts in Shanghai remained stable at 9,700-9,800 yuan/mt. ......

This week, stainless steel product and raw material prices pulled back in tandem, while steel mill profits remained basically stable with a slight pullback. Based on 304 cold-rolled category calculations, current raw material-based profit margin recovered to 1.42%, achieving positive profitability; however, dragged by previously high-priced inventory raw materials, inventory raw material-based profit margin remained at -2.54%, with destocking pressure still not fully alleviated on actual profitability.

This week, nickel pig iron raw material prices declined notably. Under macro headwinds, SHFE nickel moved lower, and NPI market sentiment turned pessimistic; demand fell amid expectations for production cuts at stainless steel mills, coupled with lower purchase prices for stainless steel scrap during the week, further pressuring high-grade NPI prices, with prices in the doldrums amid broadly bearish market sentiment. As of this Friday, the delivered duty-paid price of 10-12% grade Indonesian high-grade NPI in China fell 17.5 yuan/nickel unit to 1,022.5 yuan/nickel unit.

This week, stainless steel scrap prices declined. Under macro headwinds, SS futures moved notably lower, coupled with steel mills lowering product guidance prices, spot prices pulled back, creating direct pressure; high-grade NPI and high-carbon ferrochrome declined in tandem, steel mill purchase prices were lowered, and stainless steel scrap struggled to chart an independent course. Although the cost advantage of stainless steel scrap over high-grade NPI widened, unresolved tax invoice issues, cautious year-end purchasing by steel mills, and continued declines in production schedules meant weakening demand was hard to reverse, with prices expected to remain in the doldrums in the short term. As of this Friday, mainstream 304 off-cuts in Shanghai held steady at 9,700-9,800 yuan/mt, tax-exclusive.

This week, chrome-based raw material prices pulled back slightly. After the National Day holiday, high-carbon ferrochrome prices declined steadily, falling to their lowest level since 2025, with current retail prices notably below mainstream stainless steel mill procurement prices in October, reflecting pronounced market pessimism. With chrome ore prices declining after the holiday, cost support for ferrochrome further loosened; although ferrochrome producers faced losses, prices remained in the doldrums. As of this Friday, high-carbon ferrochrome prices in Inner Mongolia fell 25 yuan/50 base mt MoM to 7,450-7,700 yuan/50 base mt.

Overall, NPI, stainless steel scrap, and ferrochrome all weakened in tandem, driving stainless steel smelting costs lower, with current raw material-based profit margin turning positive. Looking ahead, expectations for production cuts at steel mills persist, raw material demand-side support remains insufficient, and the weak pattern for high-grade NPI and stainless steel scrap is unlikely to change in the short term; although ferrochrome producers are already facing losses, with chrome ore cost support loosening, the price bottom still needs to be solidified. In summary, the raw material side will remain in the doldrums overall, and stainless steel costs still have room to move lower, but the drag from high-priced inventory raw materials will continue to constrain steel mills' actual profitability.

[SMM Stainless Steel Scrap Market Weekly Review] Futures and Spot Prices Weaken Together, Demand Side Under Pressure, Stainless Steel Scrap Prices Pull Back This week, 304 stainless steel scrap off-cuts prices in east China fell, with a quotation range of 9,250-9,350 yuan/mt; prices in the Foshan area pulled back in tandem, with a price range of 9,650-9,950 yuan/mt. From a raw material cost perspective, the cost of producing stainless steel entirely from stainless steel scrap is approximately 13,193.42 yuan/mt, while the cost using only high-grade NPI reaches 13,918.59 yuan/mt. Stainless steel scrap still holds a notable economic substitution advantage over high-grade NPI, and its cost support role remains intact. This week, stainless steel scrap prices declined. Under the influence of macro headwinds during the week, SS futures fell notably, and with stainless steel mills lowering guidance prices for finished products, stainless steel spot prices followed suit, directly pressuring stainless steel scrap prices. On the raw material side, high-grade NPI and high-carbon ferrochrome prices also pulled back, and mainstream stainless steel mills lowered their purchase prices for stainless steel scrap. Stainless steel scrap could not decouple from the broader trend and fell in tandem. Although the economic advantage of stainless steel scrap over high-grade NPI widened further after the price decline this week, the tax invoice issue remains unresolved, and with the year-end approaching, downstream steel mills have become increasingly cautious in purchasing. Meanwhile, planned stainless steel production continued to decline, weakening demand for stainless steel scrap, making it difficult for prices to reverse their weak trend. Overall, weakening futures, lower steel mill purchase prices, and shrinking demand formed a resonance that dominated this week...

[SMM Stainless Steel Daily Review] Macro Pressure Eases, SS Most-Traded Contract Bottoms Out; Stainless Steel Spot Market Shipments Under Pressure with Sluggish Trading According to SMM on October 16, SS futures currently maintained a consolidating on a strong note pattern. As macro headwinds gradually eased, futures completed a stop-falling recovery. During the night session, the low point dipped to 13,120 yuan/mt, then consolidated higher and strengthened. By the close, the most-traded SS contract closed at 13,200 yuan/mt. In the spot market, dragged by persistently low futures, market pessimism had not yet dissipated, and the sluggish spot trading pattern was hard to change. Under shipment pressure, traders further pulled back quotes slightly. SS futures most-traded contract. At 10:15 a.m., SS2611 was at 13,220 yuan/mt, flat from the previous trading day. Spot premiums for 304/2B in Wuxi were in the range of 700-1,050 yuan/mt. In the spot market, the average price of cold-rolled 201/2B coils in Wuxi was flat; for cold-rolled 304/2B coils with raw edges, the average price in Wuxi fell 75 yuan/mt, and the average price in Foshan fell 75 yuan/mt; the price of cold-rolled 316L/2B coils in Wuxi fell 200 yuan/mt; for hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coils, quotes in Wuxi fell 150 yuan/mt; cold-rolled 430/2B coils in both Wuxi and Foshan were flat. This week, the stainless steel market remained in the doldrums. SHFE nickel and SS futures moved lower in tandem under the combined pressure of macro headwinds and weak fundamentals. The low point of SS futures dipped to 13,800 yuan/mt, once again approaching the low levels seen at the beginning of the year, with market sentiment remaining under sustained pressure. From a macro perspective, US inflation...
