BHP Seeks Formal Mediation at Escondida, Temporarily Delaying Strike at World’s Largest Copper Mine

Published: Oct 07, 2026 09:11 (GMT+8)

BHP formally requested government mediation on October 5 in its collective bargaining dispute with Escondida’s No. 2 Supervisors and Staff union. Under Chilean labor rules, the process temporarily suspends implementation of the approved strike for at least five working days, allowing the two sides to continue negotiations and improve their proposals. The mediation can be extended for a further five days by mutual agreement.

Around 95% of participating union members previously voted for strike action, so the risk has not disappeared; rather, the immediate threat of a stoppage has been pushed back. With Centinela simultaneously nearing a potential strike, labor negotiations at major Chilean copper mines are becoming an increasingly important near-term concentrate-supply risk.

Greenland Resources completed its expanded summer field program at the Malmbjerg molybdenum project. Work covered infrastructure surveys, glacier investigations, RopeCon optimisation and geotechnical inspections. The team also collected 8 tonnes of drill core and 14 tonnes of saline and fresh water for government-supported metallurgical pilot testing. Results will support detailed engineering, key-equipment procurement and construction contracts. On a 100% basis, the feasibility study targets average output of 32.8 million lb (about 14,878 tonnes) of contained molybdenum annually during the first ten years. This remains planned capacity; no final investment or construction decision was announced.

Northcliff Resources filed an updated feasibility study for the Sisson tungsten-molybdenum project in New Brunswick, Canada. On a 100% project basis, reserves total 276.8 million tonnes grading 0.023% molybdenum. The 30,000-tpd project targets average annual output of 4.2 million lb (about 1,905 tonnes) of contained molybdenum over a 27-year mine life. Initial capex is C$1.528 billion. A construction decision is targeted for H2 2027 and operations for 2030. Key environmental approvals are in place, but engineering, financing, offtake and remaining EIA conditions are still outstanding. The project represents potential long-term supply rather than current output.

Labor negotiations at Antofagasta Minerals’ Centinela copper mine have reached a critical stage after mandatory mediation ended without an agreement on October 6. The Minera Esperanza and Distrito Centinela unions, representing 708 workers, said they had begun contingency preparations and could launch a strike from October 7 local time if no last-minute agreement is reached.
