[South Texas industrial buildout lifts demand for pipefitting and steel trades]

Published: Oct 01, 2026 10:45 (GMT+8)
Industrial projects clustered in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas are lifting demand for steel-intensive trades such as pipefitting and rebar placement. Two LNG export plants under construction in Brownsville, a SpaceX expansion and a planned high-tech shipyard are the main drivers. STX Metal Trades, founded three years ago by former union pipefitter Jason Medina, runs a 12-week pipefitting course and has trained about 150 pipefitters, most now in the local workforce. Pay starts near 20 USD/hour and can reach six-figure annual earnings. Student Adolfo Sandoval, 27, places rebar at the LNG site and takes night classes to switch trades. Texas State Technical College in Harlingen has added an electrical construction certificate for the first time to match project fit-out needs.

[SMM Analysis] Indonesia Probes Chinese GI Coil for Dumping: Cheap Imports Take 52% of Demand, Eroding Local Prices
Indonesia has opened an anti-dumping investigation into galvanized steel imports from China, which now supply around 52% of domestic consumption. The case centres on persistent price undercutting and a sharp fall in domestic producers' profits. This article reviews the product, the legal framework, the evidence in the petition and what the case may mean for Indonesian and Chinese market participants.

[Nucor Reports Record Shipments as West Virginia Sheet Mill Nears Commercial Start]
Nucor reported record quarterly steel shipments and firm pricing, supported by data centres, power and manufacturing demand, though its latest guidance came in below Wall Street expectations. North America's largest steel producer and recycler runs electric arc furnace mills using scrap, a lower-emission route. Its new Apple Grove sheet mill in West Virginia is nearing completion, with commercial shipments expected early next year; it will supply flat-rolled steel to automotive, appliance and construction customers. Tariffs shield US mills, but downstream costs and policy shifts remain risks. Orders for rebar, joists and decking are steady, with nonresidential construction and energy projects driving demand. Scrap and power costs, high borrowing costs and imports are watch points.
