Port Inventory Buildup Resumes as Cargo Pick-up Weakens; Ore Prices Stay Soft with No Demand Inflection in Sight [SMM Iron Ore Daily Review]

Published: Sep 18, 2026 17:27

Iron ore futures were strong in early trading today but pulled back in the afternoon. The most-traded DCE contract I2701 closed at 715.5 yuan/mt, up 0.70% from the previous trading day. Spot prices at Qingdao Port rose by about 5-11 yuan/mt. Trader offers were moderate, steel mill purchases were mostly need-based, and overall spot transactions were thin.

Iron ore arrivals at ports were generally stable this week. Weighed by worsening steel mill losses, blast furnace hot metal production declined, port inventory shifted to accumulation, and port pick-up volume weakened in tandem. The latest SMM statistics show that total iron ore inventory at 35 major ports nationwide stood at 144.33 million mt, up 840,000 mt WoW; daily average port pick-up volume fell 25,000 mt WoW to 3.21 million mt. End-use demand has yet to show a clear turning point, and iron ore demand is unlikely to improve in the short term. Ore prices may continue to move sideways with a weaker center. [SMM Steel]

"HRC Prices Expected to Rise Next Week Despite Current Weakness; Baowu Raises Base Prices, Exports Improve"
HRC prices drifted lower this week, with overall transaction performance falling short of expectations. Additionally, the US Fed's rate hike landed this week, further cooling market sentiment. In terms of supply, rolling line maintenance decreased this week, and overall HRC production edged up slightly. On the demand side, manufacturing is slowly recovering, and overall HRC demand has begun to pick up, though it has not met market expectations. In terms of inventory, this week SMM's survey of HRC social inventory across 86 warehouses nationwide (large sample) stood at 4.6518 million mt, down 10,700 mt WoW, or -0.23% WoW. By region, all regions saw inventory buildup except east China, which destocked. Looking ahead, coke prices are more likely to remain stable next week, while iron ore prices are expected to decline, weakening HRC cost support. However, Baowu's October pricing policy was released, with HRC base prices raised by 200 yuan, and some steel mills received large export orders, easing domestic supply pressure. HRC prices still have upside expectations. In summary, the most-traded HRC contract is expected to trade in the 3,270-3,370 range next week, drifting higher.
