[Storage: Anhui Normal University Li-Cl2 battery study published in Advanced Materials]

Published: Sep 11, 2026 13:57
Researchers at Anhui Normal University, with Beijing Normal University and University of Science and Technology Beijing, published results on high-performance lithium-chlorine batteries in Advanced Materials. By tuning pore size in covalent organic framework materials from about 2.7 nm down to 0.9 nm, the team greatly enhanced chlorine confinement. The optimized microporous material achieved over 97% coulombic efficiency at high current density, 200 stable cycles at minus 20 degrees Celsius with 99% average efficiency, and high discharge capacity even at minus 40 degrees, offering a general design strategy for practical Li-Cl2 batteries.

[Solid-State Battery: Nine Departments’ 15th Five-Year Plan Incorporates Automotive Solid-State Batteries into the Specialized Standards System, Accelerating the Supply of Cutting-Edge Technology Standards]
[Solid-State Battery: Nine Departments' 15th Five-Year Plan Incorporates Automotive Solid-State Batteries into Specialised Standards System, Accelerating Supply of Cutting-Edge Technology Standards] On 9 September 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and eight other departments issued the 15th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the Intelligent Connected New Energy Vehicle Industry (MIIT Joint Regulation Letter [2026] No. 305). In the task of "continuously improving the standards system," the Plan specifies the ongoing establishment and refinement of specialised standards systems for automotive chips, automotive software, automotive artificial intelligence, automotive solid-state batteries, and low-carbon development of automobiles. In the task of "accelerating the supply of cutting-edge cross-disciplinary standards," it further proposes accelerating the formulation of frontier technology standards for automotive artificial intelligence, cockpit-driving integration, solid-state batteries, distributed electric drive, fully active suspension, integrated driving units, and chassis fusion control. The Plan does not establish a separate special clause for the industrialisation of solid-state batteries; the relevant arrangements primarily focus on standards taking the lead, providing regulatory support for subsequent technological breakthroughs and large-scale application.

[Solar: Ukraine outlines distributed solar-plus-storage reconstruction strategy]
Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal told a visiting German green-tech delegation on September 9 that pre-war generation capacity of more than 50 GW had fallen to under 10 GW following last winter's attacks, and that the country's strategic goal is to return above 50 GW with a fundamentally different energy mix: around 30% renewables, hydrogen-ready gas-fired plants, and nuclear, with no significant rebuilding of coal. Distributed solar and storage are positioned as core elements of national security architecture, with German firms such as BSW-Solar members already engaging on hospital, water utility, school, and business resilience projects.

[Energy Storage: ENEOS Power to develop 50 MW/109 MWh BESS project in Shizuoka]
Japanese utility ENEOS Power announced on September 8 the development of a 50 MW/109 MWh grid-scale battery storage project on idle land at the ENEOS Shimizu Oil Terminal in Shizuoka City. Daiwa Energy, a subsidiary of Daiwa House Industry, will handle EPC under its first third-party contract to build a grid-scale BESS asset. Groundbreaking is expected in January 2027 with commercial operation in FY2028. The project was selected under METI's FY2025 grid-scale battery storage subsidy program, receiving approximately ¥2.55 billion. It is ENEOS Power's first storage project in the 60 Hz western Japan area, following assets in Hokkaido (50 MW/88 MWh), Kanagawa (5 MW/10 MWh), and Chiba (100 MW/202 MWh).
