[SMM Tin Midday Review: The Most-Traded SHFE Tin Contract Consolidates, Spot Market Trading Limited]

September 9, 2026 Tin Spot Market Midday Commentary

1. Price Review

Today, SMM #1 tin spot was quoted at 415,700-418,700 yuan/mt, with an average price of 417,200 yuan/mt, down 1,400 yuan/mt from the previous trading day.

The most-traded SHFE tin contract consolidated this morning, reaching an intraday high of 420,460 yuan/mt and a low of 415,800 yuan/mt, closing the morning at 417,470 yuan/mt, down 1,380 yuan/mt or 0.33% from the previous trading day's settlement price.

On the LME, LME tin 3M edged higher, currently quoted at $54,800/mt, up 0.13%.

2. Spot Market

Spot market trading was sluggish today. Futures consolidated, and some downstream buyers placed orders at lower prices on dips, but overall transaction volumes were limited, with strong wait-and-see sentiment. From the end-user side, demand has yet to pick up. Electronics sector orders were mainly spot orders, with no concentrated increase in shipments; tinplate exports remained under pressure, and while food-grade stockpiling for cans and other products showed signs of starting, the scale was limited; downstream PVC product enterprises in the tin chemical sector continued to operate at a low utilization rate of around 40%, with orders primarily based on rigid demand and purchasing as needed. End-user demand showed no significant improvement, and downstream solder enterprises continued to see mediocre order flows, maintaining a strategy of purchasing as needed and low inventory turnover.

4. Comprehensive Outlook

In the short term, tin prices remain in a consolidation pattern amid intertwined geopolitical risks and a period of macro data validation. The most-traded SHFE tin contract is expected to trade within the 412,000-422,000 yuan/mt range this week, with a directional breakout requiring further market guidance, while attention should be paid to the substantive increase in end-user peak-season orders.
