In August, China’s manganese‑based materials market wrapped up its off‑season cycle. Driven by supply disruptions and differentiated downstream demand, various sub‑segments presented distinctly different market patterns. As the traditional September peak season draws near, the industrial chain is waiting for tangible recovery signals from end‑user demand.

The electrolytic manganese market operated in a supply‑surplus environment in August, with prominent off‑season characteristics. End‑user orders remained limited, spot inquiries for small‑volume trades were scarce, and overseas exports also stayed sluggish, which served as the core drag on market sentiment. Smelters raised production in advance to prepare for the upcoming peak season, lifting output. Nevertheless, demand recovery lagged behind, resulting in slow inventory absorption. In late August, industry participants rolled out price‑support and inventory‑control measures to curb sharp price declines by tightening low‑cost spot supplies. Supply‑side adjustments alone failed to reverse the off‑season weakness, and trading volumes saw no material improvement. Overall production costs remained stable, and falling auxiliary material prices somewhat eased smelting pressures. Still, soft demand squeezed industry profit margins.

For manganese sulfate, supply disruptions caused by earlier floods largely abated, and major‑production‑region enterprises resumed full operations, bringing more goods to the market. Demand had yet to emerge from the off‑season. Downstream buyers mostly adopted hand‑to‑mouth purchasing strategies with no large‑scale restocking activities, leading to gradual inventory build‑up. Peak‑season restocking is expected to get off to a slow start; the market will likely stay muted in early September, with demand improvement and marginal price recovery anticipated only in mid‑to‑late September.

Lithium manganate in the lithium‑battery sector remained under pressure in August. The lithium‑battery downstream stayed in its consumption off‑season. Coupled with continuous declines in upstream lithium prices, downstream participants demonstrated a “buy‑on‑rise‑not‑on‑fall” sentiment and adopted cautious procurement practices. Battery manufacturers strictly controlled inventory levels, forcing lithium manganate producers to cut operating rates and build up finished‑goods stocks. Although modest demand improvement is projected for September, uncertainties stemming from raw‑material price volatility will prevent a strong market rebound.

Overall, August represented a typical off‑season for manganese‑related markets, marked by interplay between supply‑side shifts and weak demand. Expectations for the September peak season are building, yet recovery timelines vary widely across products. For electrolytic manganese, market improvement hinges on whether downstream end‑user orders can align with industry price‑support efforts. For manganese sulfate, attention should be paid to the actual restocking momentum in mid‑to‑late September. Lithium manganate performance will continue to be constrained by the recovery of the broader lithium‑battery industrial chain. Whether peak‑season expectations can materialize requires continuous monitoring of real‑world end‑consumption data.

Australian Latrobe Magnesium Plant 70% Complete, Aims for 2026 Production Launch
【SMM Magnesium Flash】On September 1st, Latrobe Magnesium of Australia announced that its magnesium demonstration plant in Victoria had reached 70% construction progress, officially entering the final stretch towards commissioning. The core briquetting equipment of the project has been installed and accepted, and plans are underway to initiate step-by-step commissioning, with the goal of producing the first batch of metallic magnesium in the second half of 2026. Relying on brown coal ash solid waste resources, the plant has been steadily producing high-purity magnesium oxide and has secured a prepayment of US$2 million from the US-based Metal Exchange to lock in sales. With the advancement of the demonstration line, overseas magnesium supply is expected to be slightly supplemented, but large-scale commercial production lines still require financing and approval to be finalized, with a longer capacity release cycle.

Magnesium Market Breaks Downtrend as Coal Prices Surge, Producers Face Rising Costs
As August began, the magnesium market appeared trapped in a prolonged stalemate. The production-cut tailwinds from July faded, and primary magnesium supply steadily recovered. Meanwhile, overlapping with the overseas summer lull and the domestic die-casting off-season, downstream orders were scarce and purchasing sentiment hit rock bottom.

[SMM Magnesium Market Analysis: Coal Price Surge Ignites Magnesium Market, Two-Month Consolidation Finally Breaks Out, Production Cuts and Destocking Set Stage for Next Rally] Entering August, the magnesium market seemed to have fallen into a prolonged stalemate. The dividend from July production cuts faded, primary magnesium supply steadily recovered, while summer breaks outside China combined with the domestic die-casting off-season left downstream orders sparse and purchasing sentiment at a freezing point. With both supply and demand weak, magnesium prices were locked firmly in a narrow range of 15,800-15,950 yuan/mt, with little room to move either way. In mid-to-late August, prices even dipped to 15,750 yuan/mt at one point, with the market broadly taking a wait-and-see stance. When this bottom-level consolidation, already lasting two months, would see a turning point remained unknown.
