Platinum futures extended their rebound today. The latest US jobless claims data showed initial claims at 206,000, slightly above market expectations and up 2,000 from the revised prior figure of 204,000. Combined with dovish remarks from US Fed Governor Waller, precious metals futures continued yesterday's rebound.
In early trading, the most-traded GFEX platinum futures contract PT2610 closed at 443 yuan/g, up 1.91%. The best ask price for SGE platinum 9995 saw its spread against the GFEX PT2610 contract widen to around 5 yuan/g.
In the spot market, mainstream quotations for platinum stood at a discount of 3.5-2.5 yuan/g against the PT2610 contract. As futures rebounded, trading sentiment cooled further, with downstream players mostly on the sidelines and purchasing cautiously on an as-needed basis. Overall, platinum market trading returned to sluggish levels today.
