Raw material side, lithium carbonate prices shot up and retreated this week, nickel sulphate prices continued to edge lower, and cobalt sulphate prices saw their decline pause and stabilised at low levels.

SMM, September 3:

On the raw material side, lithium carbonate prices shot up and then pulled back this week, nickel sulphate prices continued to edge lower, and cobalt sulphate prices saw their decline pause and stabilised at low levels. This week, by material type across ternary, LCO, and LFP, on the LFP hydrometallurgy side: taking LFP electrode black mass as an example, current LFP electrode black mass prices stand at 6,700-7,050 yuan per % lithium, slightly lower WoW from Monday's transaction levels, and subsequently pulled back in line with lithium prices, though still up MoM from last month's transaction prices. Meanwhile, LFP battery black mass prices are currently at 5,850-6,300 yuan per % lithium, with the price spread versus electrode black mass still holding at a high of around 800 yuan per % lithium. On the ternary and LCO side, ternary electrode black mass nickel and cobalt payables are around 76%, down about 1 percentage point from Monday, with some high-nickel series such as 8-series and 9-series ternary electrode black mass still transacting at around 77-78%, though also edging slightly lower; LCO electrode black mass cobalt payables are at 73-75%, and LCO electrode black mass lithium payables are at 72-75%. At this stage, secondary cobalt sulphate prices have seen their decline pause and stabilised at low levels, but downstream LCO hydrometallurgy enterprises remain very cautious in their purchasing, market transactions are sluggish, and black mass of pure cobalt and high-cobalt types continues to be priced separately for cobalt and lithium, with current prices slightly below the ternary side.

Once dismissed, now frantically grabbing orders! The three Korean giants collectively pivot to LFP!
On the last day of August 2026, SK On announced that it had signed a five-year supply contract for LFP pouch battery cells with US energy storage enterprise NeoVolta Power, with a total supply of 9 GWh, and an additional 9 GWh order may be added within the year, at which point the total scale of cooperation between the two parties is expected to expand to 18 GWh. Almost simultaneously, Samsung SDI was reported to be about to finalise a three-year LFP battery cell supply agreement with an ESS integrator, worth several trillion won, with an annual supply of several GWh.

[SMM Energy Storage Battery Cell Market Weekly Review 9.3] Tight copper foil supply constrains September production schedules, energy storage battery cell prices remain firm
[SMM Analysis] Affected by tight copper foil supply and slower-than-expected capacity ramp-up for large-capacity battery cells, China and global energy storage battery cell production growth in September is expected to slow to 4.09% and 4.25% MoM, respectively, but this does not indicate weakening end-use demand. Supply-demand conditions for energy storage battery cells remain tight, with 314Ah battery cell prices holding steady. Shipments are expected to rise steadily going forward, with prices continuing their stable-to-higher trend.

CATL Chairman: China's NEV Sales Surpass 7.4M in H1, Emphasizes Precision in Battery Production
CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun, in a video address to the 2026 World Power Battery Conference, said that in H1 this year, China's NEV sales exceeded 7.4 million units, with over 600 new models launched, averaging nearly three per day. Everyone is competing on speed, specifications, and price, and development cycles are getting shorter. He noted that power batteries require extremely high precision and have very low tolerance for error. In mass production, all small issues are magnified many times over, so every process and every parameter must be strictly controlled from the design stage, anomalies must be identified in advance, and there must be zero tolerance for quality problems.
