voestalpine's Donawitz Plant Advances Electric Arc Furnace Conversion

Published: Sep 1, 2026 14:21
Austrian steelmaker voestalpine has installed the main components of the two electric arc furnaces (EAF 1 and EAF 2) that will form the core of its new production line at the Donawitz plant, as announced on August 27. Installation of the furnaces' lower and upper shells, lids, rotary towers, lifting cylinders, and electrode arms is complete, while scrap transfer vehicle installation is underway. Part of voestalpine's "greentec steel" programme, the new EAF is expected to produce approximately 850,000 tonnes of CO₂-reduced steel annually, operating primarily on scrap and green electricity, with commissioning scheduled for the first half of 2027 alongside a similar unit at the company's Linz plant.

Liberty Steel Dalzell Resumes Rolling with Slabs Imported from Kazakhstan
GFG Alliance's Liberty Steel Dalzell plant in Motherwell, Scotland, has resumed rolling operations using steel slabs imported from Kazakhstan, after disruptions at British Steel's Scunthorpe plant prevented the originally planned slab sourcing. The 300,000-ton-capacity plant had been idle since August 2024 due to weak market conditions, with financing secured in February 2026 to restart production. GFG expects slab supplies from British Steel to resume later in the year. Dalzell has been selected to supply rolled steel for Navantia UK's Fleet Solid Support vessel program, with Liberty Steel reportedly securing an order for around 34,000 tons across three vessels, though slab supply issues had delayed the process.
