[SMM Steel] Billet Prices in Indonesia Soar Rapidly

Published: Aug 27, 2026 16:00
[Indonesia] After a minimum price floor was set on Monday, billet prices continued to skyrocket. On Tuesday, prices had risen by 5 USD/metric ton, and today they rose again by 5 USD/metric ton to 475 USD/metric ton FOB. This reflects extraordinary growth in billet prices in Indonesia, driven by strong domestic demand and a slight increase in prices for products from China, which has given Indonesian steel mills the strength and confidence to raise their prices as well. It also confirms that Monday’s prediction was correct: when a minimum price floor is set and demand is strong, prices will rise.

[EU] EU HRC buyers remained cautious about accepting higher prices due to sufficient inventories and uncertainty over Q4 end-user demand. The Northwest European daily assessment edged down to approximately 853 USD/tonne EXW, while Italy held at around 840 USD/tonne EXW. A recent large EU mill transaction was concluded near 840 USD/tonne EXW, with Northwest European delivered indications at 864-875 USD/tonne. Supply constraints supported prices, but year-end destocking may limit further gains.

[Steel Billet] Today, FOB export prices for square billets rose slightly by USD 1–2/t, with quotations at Jiangyin Port at USD 458–464/t. According to feedback, export-oriented steel mills are facing continuously rising production costs and show a strong intention to hold prices firm. However, overseas demand remains mediocre, and buyers' expected price levels have not risen in tandem, making deals difficult to conclude.
