BHP and SiTration Launch Copper Recovery Pilots from Legacy Mine Water in Arizona

Published: Aug 24, 2026 09:33
BHP and MIT spinout SiTration have launched two pilot deployments to recover copper from legacy mine water at BHP’s Copper Cities site in Arizona. A one-month continuous pilot starts this month, followed by a larger deployment later this year targeting up to two tonnes of commercial-scale copper cathode over two months. Bench testing has already produced LME Grade A copper, with preliminary energy consumption below 4 kWh/kg and no added chemicals or new waste streams.

[SMM Analysis: Visit to Ningbo Zhenhai Copper Scrap Yard — High-Grade Copper Scrap in Short Supply, #2 Copper Semis Dominate] This week, SMM headed to major copper scrap yards in Ningbo's Zhenhai district for a visit. Since the beginning of this year, due to the implementation of "reverse invoicing" in the copper scrap industry, many scrap utilization enterprises were unable to carry out large-scale "reverse invoicing" and had to increase their procurement volume of imported copper scrap.
