Futures Continue to Plunge, Spot Aluminum Adjusts in the Doldrums [SMM South China Spot Aluminum Daily Review]

Published: Aug 14, 2026 12:06

SMM, August 14:

Futures extended sharp losses today, while South China spot aluminum was in the doldrums and adjusted only slightly. With prices falling and inventory returning to a destocking path, holders initially tried to sell at firm prices in the morning. However, as bearish sentiment brewed near the weekend and the willingness to cash out early gradually increased, most sellers lowered prices slightly to offer discounts. Mainstream quotations were at discounts of -10 to 0 yuan/mt, supply was relatively ample, and some sellers still held premiums and sold slowly. On the demand side, downstream buyers initially stayed on the sidelines and bought little on expectations of lower prices, then gradually increased restocking at lower prices, though volumes remained limited. In the trade sector, participants mainly pushed for lower prices to absorb discounted cargoes, with only small volumes restocked at firm prices. Amid the supply-demand tug of war, overall trading was moderate. Spot transaction prices were concentrated at premiums of 60-100 yuan/mt over the SHFE aluminum 2608 contract.

SPIC Inner Mongolia Advances Anode Changing with Mechanized Grabs, Boosting Efficiency and Safety
SPIC Inner Mongolia Company Huomei Hongjun Aluminum Power Company is actively advancing the mechanization upgrade of anode changing operations. By replacing traditional manual operations with multi-function unit grabs, it has achieved remote and precise cleaning of crust and sediment at the bottom of electrolysis cells. Operators control the entire process from a safe distance, fundamentally changing the previous high-risk mode of working close to high-temperature electrolysis cells with handheld shovels. Since the company launched the grab upgrade at the end of 2024, the results have been remarkable: the grab utilization rate has reached 87.8%, the average current efficiency of aluminum electrolysis cells has remained stable at 93.5%, anode changing workers have been reduced by one-third compared with previous levels, and labour intensity has dropped by more than 60%. According to estimates, each 0.1% improvement in current efficiency can raise annual aluminum production by more than 50 mt. Currently, the company is accelerating the repair and upgrade of the second batch of six multi-function unit grabs. Once all 12 units are put into use, anode changing operations will achieve a comprehensive upgrade that is more efficient and safer.
