[India's aluminum recyclers urged to secure alternative scrap supplies as UAE and EU tighten exports]

Published: Aug 13, 2026 09:12
Indian secondary aluminum producers should diversify sourcing and prioritize supply security over price as geopolitical tensions and export restrictions increasingly disrupt global scrap flows, industry panelists said at Mumbai's Global Commodity Conclave on August 12; India, the world's second-largest aluminum producer but reliant on imports for 85% of its scrap needs, is already feeling the pinch from UAE export curbs that hit its extrusion sector hard, given India absorbed 66% of UAE's aluminum scrap exports in 2025, while the EU is weighing a proposed 15% export levy on scrap that could further tighten availability, with India accounting for roughly 30% of EU scrap exports; panelists urged Indian buyers to look toward the US, Australia and South America, move away from lean inventory models toward holding three to 3.5 months of stock, and shift from price-driven to strategic, security-focused procurement.
