South Korean steelmaker Hyundai Steel increased its second-quarter steel sales by 3.7% quarter on quarter to 4.42 million tonnes, mainly driven by higher shipments of flat steel, long steel and automotive steel. Revenue rose 2.7% year on year to KRW 6.11 trillion, but operating profit fell 43.1% y/y to KRW 58 billion, while net profit declined 67.6% y/y to KRW 12 billion. This indicates that the recovery in steel sales has not yet translated into an overall improvement in profitability, limiting near-term support for coking coal demand. Hyundai Steel also plans to commission a 2.8 million-tonnes-per-year EAF steelworks in 2029. If the project eventually replaces part of the company’s blast-furnace capacity, it could create structural downside risks for Hyundai Steel’s medium- to long-term coking coal and coke demand.

【U.S. Steel Košice’s H1 Steel Output Falls 7%, Weighing on Near-Term Coking Coal Demand】
Slovak steelmaker U.S. Steel Košice (USSK) produced 1.79 million short tons of steel in the first half of 2026, down 7% year on year. Its capacity utilization rate fell by 5 percentage points to 72%, while steel shipments declined 8% to 1.58 million short tons. In the second quarter, steel production and shipments decreased 4% and 6%, respectively. Despite the lower output, USSK’s first-half net revenue rose 6% year on year to $1.49 billion, while EBITDA increased 40% to $108 million, supported mainly by higher steel prices, a more favorable product mix and foreign-exchange movements. This suggests that improved profitability temporarily offset the pressure from lower production. The company has applied to build an EAF at its Košice site. If the project is ultimately approved and replaces part of the plant’s blast-furnace capacity, it could create structural downside risks for USSK’s medium- to long-term coking coal and coke demand.

【U.S. Power Demand Seen Hitting Fresh Records in 2026 and 2027, but Coal’s Generation Share to Decline】
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects U.S. electricity consumption to rise from 4,195 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025 to 4,268 billion kWh in 2026 and 4,391 billion kWh in 2027, driven mainly by growing electricity use from artificial-intelligence data centers and broader electrification among households and businesses. However, higher power demand is not expected to translate directly into stronger coal demand. EIA forecasts coal’s share of power generation to decline from 17% in 2025 to 16% in 2026 and 15% in 2027, while renewables’ share rises from about 24% to 27% and natural gas remains at 40%. The changing generation mix suggests that incremental U.S. power demand may benefit natural gas and renewables more than thermal coal, creating structural pressure on U.S. coal demand and prices. The actual impact will depend on gas prices, coal-plant utilization and renewable generation. EIA also cut its forecast for Texas power-load growth in 2027 to 6% from 14% previously after the state announced a pause on new data-center development. Nevertheless, nationwide U.S. electricity consumption is still expected to reach new records in both 2026 and 2027.
