【Coal Hover Near 1-Month High on Indonesia Supply Woes and Energy Rally, But Gains Capped by Weak Chinese Demand】

Published: Jul 29, 2026 14:32
In late July, thermal coal futures rebounded to around $130.25 per tonne, hovering near a one-month high. Reports indicate that dry weather in Indonesia, the world's largest thermal coal exporter, disrupted barge transport along the critical Barito River in Kalimantan, with some miners declaring force majeure and fueling near-term supply tightness fears. Meanwhile, escalating Middle East tensions pushed Brent crude up, boosting fuel costs across the broader energy market. However, further price gains remain strictly capped by weak import demand from China, the top consumer, where high stockpiles and cautious procurement by utilities continue to suppress momentum.
