Recently, the SPIC Wenzhou Green Hydrogen Project has made significant progress, with the first batch of 3,750 mt of green methanol successfully loaded and shipped to destinations outside China, marking that China's green fuel industry has entered a new stage of international commercial delivery and achieved a major breakthrough in large-scale green methanol exports.
According to sources, the exported green methanol came from the SPIC Wenzhou Da'an Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project. The project uses a process coupling industrial tail gas and hydrogen produced from renewable energy to make green methanol. It was completed and put into operation in July 2025, equipped with facilities for approximately 800,000 mt of methanol output per year, 32,000 mt of green hydrogen production per year, and 180,000 mt of hydrogen storage, making it one of the world's largest green fuel demonstration projects.
Since commissioning, the project has run stably for over 300 days, with overall production indicators stable. Relying on independently developed water electrolysis equipment and process technology, the project has achieved synergy between industrial tail gas resource utilisation and green methanol production, and realised large-scale stable operation in 2025, providing solid support for continued international market deliveries.
At the same time, SPIC actively promoted alignment with international rules, proactively participated in building international sustainability and certification systems, and pushed green fuel products to meet market access requirements outside China. Focusing on the international sustainability and carbon certification system, renewable fuel standards, and life cycle carbon accounting, the project continuously improved its full-chain certification capabilities, creating conditions for green fuel to enter international markets.
Industry insiders believe that this large-scale export of green methanol not only reflects the continuous improvement of China's green fuel technology and industrialisation capabilities, but also enhances China's competitiveness in the global green energy industry chain, accumulating practical experience for the international trade of green fuels.
SPIC said that the next step will be to continue deepening international cooperation, actively expand markets outside China, continuously advance the industrialisation and international deployment of green fuels, constantly improve the green methanol industry chain system, push more green fuel products into international markets, and provide more Chinese solutions for the global energy transition to green and low-carbon.
