Recently, Intelligent Energy (IE), a global hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer, officially launched its 120 kW hydrogen fuel cell power system for heavy-duty fixed-wing UAVs and secured its largest commercial order to date in the UAV sector. This product launch not only further expands the company's business footprint in the UAV market but also reflects the growing market acceptance of hydrogen fuel cell technology for large UAV applications.
It is understood that this project aligns with the £5 billion UAV and autonomous systems development strategy funded by the UK government through the Defence Investment Plan, demonstrating the UK's ongoing efforts to strengthen its domestic UAV industry. At the same time, this indirectly indicates that the commercial application of hydrogen fuel cells in the UAV sector is expanding.
Compared with traditional battery-powered fixed-wing UAVs, the new system can increase flight time by approximately 3 to 5 times, emitting only water vapor during operation and featuring low noise, low vibration, low maintenance requirements, and tolerance to high and low temperatures, making it more suitable for long-endurance missions such as surveillance, inspection, national defense security, and aerial logistics.
The newly launched product, IE-FLIGHT™ 120, is primarily aimed at the long-range fixed-wing UAV market and can support payload platforms of approximately 150 kg to 750 kg, meeting multi-scenario application needs such as inspection, security, logistics, and national defense. It is also the latest member of the IE-FLIGHT aviation fuel cell series, forming a complete aviation power product portfolio alongside the company's existing IE-SOAR system and the IE-DRIVE product for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
In terms of R&D, Intelligent Energy earlier this year received approximately £17 million in funding from the UK's Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) to advance the HEIGTS project and the development of high-power aviation fuel cell technology. Meanwhile, the company is also building a new high-power fuel cell testing center in Loughborough, UK, to provide technical support for subsequent product development and validation.
Intelligent Energy stated that as UAV platforms continue to trend toward larger sizes, market demand for longer range, higher payload capacity, and greater mission capability is growing. The newly launched fixed-wing power system not only validates the application potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology in large UAVs but also provides a new power solution for the future development of fixed-wing and eVTOL aviation platforms.
In addition, the company noted that the order received based on the IE-SOAR technology platform further confirms the industry development trend, where UAV operators are accelerating the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell propulsion systems to meet operational requirements for longer endurance, greater payload capacity, and higher efficiency.
