XPeng's He Xiaopeng Advocates Skipping L3, Leaping to L4 for Safety

Published: Apr 16, 2026 09:30
At the XPeng GX pre-sale launch event, He Xiaopeng, CEO of XPeng Motors, once again addressed the debate over whether L3 autonomous driving should be skipped. He stated, "It's a good thing to see a flourishing of diverse approaches in the market. I'm happy to see different schools of thought, but ultimately, data must be used to verify how safety can truly be ensured." He Xiaopeng believed that from a safety perspective, the most prudent path was to leap directly from L2 to L4, accumulating sufficient data along the way, prioritizing safety, and simultaneously driving the improvement of relevant policies. He further explained, "L4 must achieve driverless operation while ensuring safety. If safety can be guaranteed but driverless operation cannot be achieved, then it is essentially still L2.
