【SMM Steel】Canada reviews auto tariff remissions to protect industry

【SMM Steel】On Feb 5, 2026, PM Carney announced a strategy to protect Canada's auto sector. Stakeholders can give feedback until April 13 on changes to the automotive remission framework. The goal is to align trade policy with local production and jobs. Currently, Canadian-based manufacturers can import US-made vehicles tariff-free within quotas. Since April 2025, Canadian-made vehicles face a 25% US tariff on non-US content. The sector supports 500,000+ jobs and CA$16bn GDP.
