[SMM Steel] Feralpi Stahl, part of Italy’s Feralpi Group, is increasing annual steel capacity at its Riesa plant in Germany from 1 million mt to 1.3 million mt through a new Danieli rolling mill commissioned last May. The new facility currently operates on a two-shift basis and is expected to receive final equipment certification this summer. The mill targets annual rebar-in-coil output of 400,000-450,000 mt, with plans to shift to three-shift operations by 2027 depending on market conditions. The company also said it will continue investing in scrap processing operations.

[SMM Steel] Italian plantmaker Danieli announced that Ramsarup Industries, a subsidiary of Shyam Metalics & Energy, selected Danieli to supply a new special bar quality (SBQ) mill for its Kharagpur Works in India. The mill is scheduled to start operations in early 2027 with annual production capacity of 600,000 mt of finished long products. Danieli said the facility will use advanced Morgårdshammar SBQ technology and support production flexibility across special steel rounds, bar-in-coil, and commercial-grade bars.

[SMM Steel] The UK is seeking exemptions from the EU’s upcoming steel import restrictions as London and Brussels continue post-Brexit trade negotiations. The EU plans to reduce tariff-free steel quotas and raise out-of-quota tariffs to 50%, while the UK is also preparing similar measures, including a 60% reduction in tariff-free quotas and 50% tariffs above quota limits. UK Trade Minister Chris Bryant said restrictive measures between the UK and EU would be counterproductive, arguing that global overcapacity, particularly from China, remains the core issue affecting European steel markets.
