On April 14,  an SMM team, comprised of Jianhua Ye, Industry Research Director, Chundi Feng, Expert at Industry Research Institute, and Jenny Wu, Copper & Tin Overseas Marketing Manager, paid a visit to NFC Africa Mining PLC. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Jingjun Wang, Chairman of NFC Africa Mining PLC and President of the Chinese Mining Enterprises Association in Zambia (CMEAZ).

During the visit, both sides engaged in in-depth discussions and candid exchanges on core topics including NFC Africa Mining PLC's copper ore resources and production plans, product specifications and pricing rules, mining processes and equipment configuration, human resource allocation, as well as costs, taxes and fees, and asset depreciation.

Jingjun Wang elaborated on the overall operation and development of the company. The Chambishi copper mine of NFC Africa Mining consists of the main ore body, the western ore body, and the southeastern ore body. The company is currently striving to build a first-class technology-driven mining company underpinned by "advanced technology, green processes, high-end equipment, and lean management," with a cumulative total investment of $1.55 billion. The company currently produces approximately 74,000 mt of copper metal content annually and employs 5,900 Zambian staff.

Under Jingjun Wang's leadership, NFC Africa Mining has long focused on solidifying its presence in the mining sector, making steady strides in boosting China-Zambia friendly cooperation, shared development and high-quality corporate growth. As President of CMEAZ, he also highlighted the association’s pivotal role: uniting Chinese-funded mining enterprises in Zambia, advancing standardized compliance operations and professional compliance training, and serving as a unified voice for Chinese enterprises to communicate and engage with local authorities on relevant policies and regulations.

This exchange not only enhanced mutual trust and understanding between both sides, but also laid a solid foundation for deepening future cooperation and achieving mutual benefits, helping both parties work together toward higher-quality collaborative development in the non-ferrous metals sector.

Introduction to NFC Africa Mining PLC

NFC Africa Mining PLC (hereinafter referred to as "NFC Africa Mining") was the starting point of China's nonferrous industry's "Going Global" strategy in Africa. Approved by the central government, it was established in Zambia in 1998. China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. and ZCCM Investment Holdings PLC hold 85% and 15% of the company's equity respectively, with the Zambian government holding one special share. It currently serves as the president unit of CMEAZ.

The Southeast Orebody of Chambishi Copper Mine was the first kilometer-deep shaft mine built by China in Africa, hailed as a "landmark project of China-Africa cooperation." NFC Africa Mining was the first mining company in Zambia to introduce paste backfill green mining technology, and the first mining company in Africa to build a "digital mine" model project. The company was twice named an "Advanced Collective of Central State-Owned Enterprises." The "NFC Africa Mining Outstanding Employee Family Open Day" was recognized as an "Excellent Case of Cross-Cultural Integration in Overseas Image Building of Chinese Enterprises."

The Chambishi Copper Mine area of NFC Africa Mining consists of the Main Orebody, the West Orebody, and the Southeast Orebody.

 Africa Critical Minerals Forum 2026

SMM is also thrilled to announce that the Africa Critical Minerals Forum 2026 is scheduled to be held on September 15–16, 2026 in Lusaka, Zambia. The conference will bring together industry leaders, investors, policymakers, and technology providers from across the globe to explore the future of copper, cobalt and Tin—key drivers of the global energy transition. With Zambia home to some of the world's most significant copper and cobalt resources, and with Africa holding crucial tin reserves—particularly in the Central African Tin Belt spanning the DRC and Rwanda—this summit offers a unique platform to discuss cutting-edge mining technologies, sustainable practices, investment opportunities, and supply chain strategies. Attendees will engage in high-level dialogues on topics ranging from ESG compliance and renewable energy integration to logistics optimization and community-driven development.

We look forward to your joining us at the Africa Critical Minerals Forum 2026 and jointly shaping the future of Africa’s critical minerals industry.

Chilean Court Revoked $3.2 Billion Project Permit for Collahuasi Copper Mine
Chile's Second Environmental Court recently revoked the environmental permit for the "Infrastructure and Capacity Enhancement" project at Collahuasi, one of the world's largest copper mines. The project planned to invest over $3.2 billion, with the core objective of building a seawater desalination plant to extend the mine's lifespan. The court ruled that the mining company had failed to adequately consult with affected indigenous communities and that the assessment of environmental impacts on the marine environment was insufficient. The mining company stated that existing water sources could support short-term production and would not immediately affect production.
