On December 20 at 11:00 a.m., accompanied by a thunderous blast, the 160-meter-high south tower of the 500-kilovolt Feixi–Fanchang transmission line project's Yangtze River crossing was successfully demolished by controlled explosion. This breakthrough paves the way for the construction of the Gansu–Zhejiang ±800-kilovolt ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission project's river-crossing power channel.
As a key national project in China's 14th Five-Year Plan for power development, the Gansu–Zhejiang UHVDC project involves a total investment of approximately ¥35.3 billion. Spanning 2,370 kilometers, it connects Wuhai City in Gansu Province with Shaoxing City in Zhejiang Province, traversing six provinces/autonomous regions: Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui, and Zhejiang. With a transmission capacity of 8,000 megawatts, the project includes the construction of converter stations at both ends—in Wuhai and Shaoxing. Notably, it stands as the world's first cross-regional UHVDC transmission project adopting voltage-source converter (VSC) technology at both sending and receiving terminals.
