Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On May 7, CATL launched the TENER Stack at the EES Europe in Munich, marking the unveiling of the world's first mass-producible 9MWh ultra-large-capacity energy storage system soultion, according to a press release of CATL.

The company said the launch represents a significant leap in system capacity, deployment flexibility, safety, and transport efficiency—signaling the start of a new era in large-scale energy storage technology.

TENER Stack is powered by CATL's high-energy-density battery cells. Compared to traditional 20-foot container systems, it boasts a 45% increase in space utilization and a 50% boost in energy density. With a single-unit capacity of 9MWh, the system can charge approximately 150 electric vehicles or power a typical German household for six years.

The high capacity of TENER Stack also delivers substantial economic benefits. Deploying 800MWh of storage capacity with TENER Stack requires nearly one-third fewer containers than conventional 6MWh systems. This improvement increases land-use efficiency by 40% and reduces overall power station construction costs by 20%.

To comply with the 36-tonne legal road transport limit enforced in many countries, CATL developed a modular "Two in One" design, keeping each half-height container under the threshold weight—ensuring compatibility with regulations in 99% of global markets.

An innovative split design further enhances logistical efficiency by accommodating multiple standard transportation modes, reducing lead times, and cutting special transport costs by 35%. With a lower center of gravity and enhanced maneuverability, TENER Stack can navigate bridges and rural roads with ease, underscoring the advantages of its structural innovation.

Amid growing concerns around safety in energy storage applications, TENER Stack increases gas sensor sensitivity by 40%, which in turn accelerates system suppression response time by 35%.

A new triple-layer insulation design boosts fire resistance to two hours. The system also meets IEEE 693 seismic standards, enabling it to withstand magnitude 9 earthquakes and category 5 hurricanes.

As of the end of November last year, CATL's energy storage systems had been deployed in over 1,700 projects worldwide, operating across diverse climates and conditions.

BYD Tops Global Automotive Innovation Ranking, First Chinese Automaker to Lead Since 2005
On April 21 (local time), the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) released its “Automotive Innovation Report 2026”. Chinese automaker BYD ranked first in the global automotive innovation ranking with 157 points, surpassing last year’s leader Volkswagen (143 points). Mercedes-Benz came in third with 134 points. XPeng ranked fourth with 128 points, followed by BMW and Geely Group in fifth and sixth places. Renault, Toyota, General Motors, and Hyundai also made the top ten. This marks the first time since the launch of the “Automotive Innovation Study” in 2005 that a Chinese automaker has taken the top position. According to CAM, the ranking evaluates automakers based on their performance in electrification, intelligent technologies, and overall innovation capabilities.

Hyundai Completes U.S. EV Vertical Integration as Battery Plants Near Launch
Hyundai Motor Group is set to begin operations at battery plants in Georgia, jointly established with LG Energy Solution and SK On, with one facility starting this month and the other later this year. Once fully ramped up, the group will secure annual EV production capacity exceeding 600,000 units in the U.S. LG Energy Solution’s plant will have an annual capacity of 30 GWh, supplying cells for models such as the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9 produced at HMGMA. Meanwhile, SK On’s 35 GWh capacity will be converted into battery packs by Hyundai Mobis and fully supplied to Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EVs manufactured in the U.S.
