French Engie Group Completes Largest Energy Storage System in Latin America

On April 17th, the BESS Coya Park, located in María Elena city in the Antofagasta region of Chile and owned by the French Engie Group, was officially completed. It is currently the largest energy storage system in Latin America. The project has a planned capacity of 139 megawatts and an energy storage capacity of 638 megawatts, utilizing battery energy storage system technology to store electricity from the Coya PV solar power plant also owned by the group. The system consists of 232 containers, with an average distribution of 58 inverters, generating an average of 200 gigawatt hours per year and providing power for 5 hours. It can supply green energy to 100,000 households, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 65,642 tons annually.

With a fragile grid, a 20.6% curtailment rate and the world's second-highest residential power prices, Brazil will launch Latin America's largest national storage tender (about 18GW in round one) in December 2026, drawing CATL, Trina, Hithium, CLOU, Gotion and Great Power to expand locally.
