Last week, the pellet premiums fell, while the lump premiums stabilised.

SHANGHAI, Apr 24 (SMM) - Last week, the pellet premiums fell, while the lump premiums stabilised. The steel mills were less willing to produce under the pressure of higher finished steel inventories. Some mills reduced their pig iron output, thus the demand for high-grade iron ore decreased, driving down the pellet premiums. However, steel mills' demand for lump grew amid the third round of coke price cuts.

The overall iron ore demand will decrease this week since some steel mills will carry out maintenance. And steel consumption has also weakened in the off-season. The loss-making steel mills cannot afford high-priced iron ore concentrates, further dragging down the premiums of pellets and lumps.

Last week, the spread between high and medium-grade imported iron ores narrowed, but that between medium and low-grade ores expanded. Taking Qingdao Port as an example, the price difference between mainstream high-grade ore (IOCJ) and medium-grade ore (PBF) narrowed by 4 yuan/mt to 95 yuan/mt from a week ago, while that between mainstream PBF and low-grade ore (SSF) expanded by 29 yuan/mt to 140 yuan/mt. IOCJ prices slumped on slack demand from steel mills as a result of low profit margins. Prices of some mainstream medium-grade ores remained firm due to the high costs, while the prices of low-grade ores dropped greatly on the high inventory. As a result, the price difference between the medium and low-grade ores expanded sharply. Steel mills suffering high finished product inventory pressure and huge losses will prefer low-grade iron ores in order to cut costs. It is expected that the price difference between high and medium-grade iron ores will expand this week, while that between medium and low-grade ores will narrow.

【Sical Logistics Wins Five-Year Indian Mining Contract Covering About 9.1 Million Tonnes of Coal】
Indian integrated logistics and engineering services company Sical Logistics has secured a five-year mining contract worth approximately ₹5.3473 billion from Central Coalfields Limited for heavy earth-moving and mining operations at the SDOC Mine in Bokaro district, Jharkhand. The contract covers the re-handling of approximately 20.14 million cubic metres of overburden, the removal of around 33.65 million cubic metres of hard overburden, and the extraction of approximately 9.104 million tonnes of coal from a 143-hectare working area. The contract value includes an 18% goods and services tax, while the execution period is 1,825 days. A simple five-year average would place the contracted coal volume at approximately 1.82 million tonnes per year.

【India’s ECL Begins Precautionary Sealing at Khandra Colliery】
Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) said on August 31 that it had begun precautionary sealing measures at Khandra Colliery in the Raniganj coal belt. Surface cracks and ground subsidence were first observed near the Nikanth Temple on July 28. ECL said unauthorised structures and illegal occupants in the affected area had restricted surface-filling work. As the cracks could not be properly filled, external air could enter the underground workings, aggravate the spontaneous heating of residual coal and further increase the risk of spontaneous combustion. ECL therefore initiated the sealing measures to protect employees and surrounding areas and will continue monitoring conditions at the site. Existing employees will be redeployed to other units of the same mine or neighbouring mines according to operational requirements. The sealing measures will not disrupt existing water or electricity supplies to residential quarters. ECL has not determined how long the sealing will remain in place and rejected reports suggesting that the colliery could be sealed for three months. The final duration will be determined based on expert advice, technical assessments and established mine-safety requirements.

【Drought in East Kalimantan Lowers Mahakam River Levels, Coal Barge Loads Reportedly Fall by About 21%】
Extreme drought has lowered river levels in East Kalimantan, disrupting transportation operations for some coal producers. Data from Indonesia’s meteorological agency showed that East Kalimantan received almost no rainfall in August. To prevent barges from running aground, local producers have been forced to reduce their coal loads. A local port official said that barges normally capable of carrying 7,000 tonnes of coal are currently limited to approximately 5,500 tonnes, representing a reduction of 1,500 tonnes, or about 21.4%, per trip. Some barges continue to face difficulties travelling upstream despite carrying reduced loads. The industry group noted that the decline in carrying capacity per trip will require more voyages and raise logistics costs.
