On February 23, Australian mining company BHP Billiton is currently testing hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), which will be used in mining equipment at the Yandi mine in Western Australia. Through a partnership with bp, the renewable diesel produced by HVO will be used to transport trucks and other mining equipment during an initial three-month trial period.

Brandon Craig, president of BHP's Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) assets, said: "About 40% of BHP's greenhouse gas emissions come from diesel, which is a core focus of our decarbonisation strategy."

“Ultimately, our goal is to have an all-electric truck fleet in the mining area, and fuels such as HVO will help us reduce greenhouse gas emissions while electrifying.”

BHP Billiton is considering the use of renewable fuels in its WAIO and other regions around the world, with an medium term goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by FY2030.
