SMM8 March 13: it is reported that China Huayou Cobalt Co will suspend manual cobalt trade in two mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo until it is confirmed that its production process does not include human rights abuse, and the relevant standards will be defined by the industry.
Huayou Cobalt will continue to comply with the "better Mining" plan proposed by the RCS group, (Better Mining programme), RCS, which aims to ensure that artisanal cobalt mines do not use child labour or provide funds for armed groups.
With the support of Huayou Cobalt, the project monitored the Kasulo and Kamilombe mines for two years.
The head of corporate social responsibility of Huayou said that Huayou Cobalt is still committed to supporting the regularization of the Congolese cobalt industry.
Members of the responsible Mining Initiative (RMI) are currently setting standards for responsible manual cobalt procurement. According to Leah Butler, vice president of RMI Business Alliance, RMI aims to develop standards by the end of this year and implement them by 2021.
