SMM4 23: recently, Vale released the first quarter of 2020 production and sales report. In terms of manganese, the total output of manganese ore in the first quarter of 2020 was 363kt, 19.3% lower than that in the fourth quarter of 2019, and the same as that in the first quarter of 2019. Manganese ore sales reached 219 kt in the first quarter of 2020, down 61.6% and 13.1% from the fourth quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2019, respectively.

The month-on-month decline in production and sales was mainly due to weather-related anomalies during this period, which affected production and shipments at the port of (PontadaMadeira) in Madeira. The operation of the Urucum underground mine is additional affected by safety improvements and maintenance activities.

Ferroalloy production totaled 28 kt in the first quarter of 2020, in line with production in the fourth quarter of 2019, while sales totaled 27 kt in the first quarter of 2020, 22.9% lower than in the fourth quarter, due to a slowdown in production as a result of safety maintenance measures at the esFilho plant.
