Explosion at Hydro's Kentucky remelting and recycling plant suspended production

Published: Jan 24, 2019 10:13

On January 23rd a furnace exploded at Hydro's remelting and recycling plant in Henderson, Kentucky.

With its vast production network in the United States, Hydro is currently working to obtain metals from other sources. In the short term, the impact on customers is expected to be very limited. However, it is not clear how many weeks the plant will be closed.

It is not clear what caused the explosion, and Hydro is mobilizing internal resources to set up an investigation team.

Henderson's remelting and recycling plant is capable of casting up to 90,000 tons of secondary aluminum products per year, using industrial and post-consumer waste as raw materials, mainly for the Midwest market.

Hydro Norway is a primary smelter integrating bauxite alumina and P1020 as well as downstream products such as rolled aluminum billet and extrusion.

Middle East Crisis Sparks Global Economic Slowdown and Inflation, UN Report Shows
The *World Economic Situation and Prospects as of Mid-2026* report released by the United Nations clearly pointed out that the Middle East crisis has posed a new round of shocks to the global economy, directly leading to a slowdown in global economic growth, a renewed climb in inflationary pressures, and a further intensification of global economic uncertainty. Notably, the impact of this crisis has been highly uneven, with developing countries bearing the brunt of the shocks. As things stand, global economic growth is expected to reach 2.5% in 2026, though this figure has been revised down by 0.2 percentage points from the January forecast.
