SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has announced the finalists of 11thsteelChallenge. The winners were picked from the Regional Championship which was held online for a 24-hour period on Nov 30, 2016. A total of 1,479 participants from 37 different countries took part in the challenge. The number of participants witnessed jump of 36% over the previous year.

The awards are divided into ‘Student’ and ‘Industry’ category. The details of finalists in the ‘Student’ category are:-

The World Championship finalists will now participate in the World Championship scheduled for 11 April 2017 in Beijing, China. This round of the competition will use one of the steeluniversity simulations during a 2-hour period. The challenge for this round of competition will be to produce the single best result for the simulation. steelChallenge-11 will utilize steeluniversity’s Basic Oxygen Steelmaking simulation. The competitors will be tasked to produce a grade of steel, meeting technical requirements at the lowest cost per tonne. The simulation will be played on tablets supplied by steeluniversity.

The results of the World Championship will be audited and the winners will be declared on 11 April, 2017. There will be a World Champion in each of the student and industry categories. The award ceremony will have presence of eminent leaders from global steel industry.

The World Championship finalists will be awarded €500, travel allowance of up to €1,500 to participate in the World Championship, Apple iPad tablet after use at the World Championship, World Championship Finalist certificate and Award ceremony with the worldsteel Board of Directors at the World Championship. In addition, the participants qualified to the World Championship in the student category could win up to €1,500 in travel allowance for their faculty advisor to join them at the Championship. The World Champions will be awarded €500, World Champion certificate and steelChallenge-11 trophy.

The ‘Steel’ level sponsor of steelChallenge-11 is China Steel Corporation. Tenaris, Ternium and Tata Steel Limited are the ‘Silver’ level sponsors of the event. The ‘Bronze’ level sponsors are Nucor Corporation and JFE Steel.

The winner of in the ‘Student’ category in the steelChallenge-10 World Championship held last year was Eonsung Lee of Kyungpook National University, South Korea. The winner in the ‘Industry’ category was Marcos Daniel Gouveia Filho from Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) in Brazil.

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. worldsteel members represent approximately 85% of the world's steel production, including over 150 steel producers with 9 of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes.

Ngày 22/9, Western Mining thông báo công ty con thuộc sở hữu toàn bộ là Công ty TNHH Phát triển Khai khoáng Ganxin Thanh Hải (“Ganxin Mining”) vừa nhận được Giấy phép Khai thác do Sở Tài nguyên Thiên nhiên tỉnh Thanh Hải cấp. Mỏ có tên là Mỏ đa kim sắt Tuwenchahan Geermu của Công ty TNHH Phát triển Khai khoáng Ganxin Thanh Hải, với các khoáng sản được phép khai thác gồm sắt, đồng, vàng, molypden, kẽm, chì và bạc. Giấy phép khai thác có hiệu lực từ ngày 3/8/2026 đến ngày 30/8/2043.

Ngày 21/9, Korea Zinc thông báo dự án sản xuất trị giá 7,4 tỷ USD tại Mỹ đã vượt qua đánh giá tác động môi trường. Cơ sở này dự kiến bắt đầu vận hành thử nghiệm vào năm 2029 và sản xuất thương mại vào năm sau, sản xuất 11 loại khoáng sản quan trọng, 12 kim loại màu và axit sulfuric cấp bán dẫn. Vào tháng 4, Korea Zinc cho biết đã hoàn tất việc mua lại một nhà máy luyện kẽm địa phương và các công ty liên quan khác. Công ty có kế hoạch triển khai dự án bằng cách mở rộng và nâng cấp các cơ sở hiện có.

Ngày 9 tháng 9 năm 2026, Australia khởi xướng rà soát cuối kỳ lần thứ hai đối với biện pháp chống bán phá giá thép mạ kẽm từ Ấn Độ, Malaysia và Việt Nam, đồng thời tiến hành rà soát cuối kỳ riêng đối với biện pháp chống trợ cấp áp dụng cho hàng nhập khẩu từ Ấn Độ. Kỳ rà soát từ tháng 7/2025 đến tháng 6/2026, với báo cáo cuối cùng dự kiến công bố trước ngày 11 tháng 2 năm 2027. Do thép mạ kẽm là lĩnh vực tiêu thụ kẽm lớn nhất, các biện pháp này ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến chi phí xuất khẩu và năng lực cạnh tranh, có khả năng tác động đến nhu cầu kẽm nội địa và chuỗi cung ứng của Australia. Việc duy trì thuế sẽ mang lại sự bảo hộ nhất định cho năng lực sản xuất thép và mạ trong nước, trong khi chấm dứt thuế có thể làm gia tăng hàng nhập khẩu giá rẻ và ảnh hưởng đến tiêu thụ kẽm trong khu vực. Kết quả cuối cùng vẫn phụ thuộc vào quyết định của cơ quan chức năng.
