[SMM Iron & Steel] Brazil’s Pig Iron Exports Surge 49% in Early 2026

The Brazilian Steelmakers Association (IAB) reported that pig iron exports surged 49% in January 2026 to 408,000 tonnes. In February, average prices rose by $20/t to $430/t FOB. The price hike is attributed to seasonal rainy factors impacting logistics and increased demand from U.S. and European mills.

【SMM Steel】Nippon Steel begins BF to EAF conversion at Kyushu Works

【SMM Steel】Nippon Steel started converting BF-based production to EAF at its Kyushu Works (Yawata), a major decarbonization step. The project aims to establish the world's first integrated mass production system for high-grade steel using a large-scale EAF. Kyushu will install a ~2 Mt/y crude steel EAF with secondary refining/CC. Construction began; ops start H2 FY2029. Investment: JPY630.2bn.
