Recently, the project "Development and Application of Large-Volume, Safe and Efficient High-Pressure Hydrogen Storage Vessels," initiated by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Science and Technology, passed its acceptance review. Led by Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Group and jointly undertaken by Shanghai Hyfun Energy and CNNC Equipment Technology Research (Shanghai) Co., the outcome provides key technical support for large-scale hydrogen storage from renewable energy and consolidates the foundation for localisation of hydrogen storage equipment in China.
As a key Shanghai new-energy technology project, it focuses on the low-cost storage challenge arising from large-scale renewable-energy hydrogen production, develops a safe and efficient hydrogen storage system, and builds a demonstration and validation platform. The project ensures the system meets safety and compliance standards and delivers reusable design documents, solving pain points in large-scale hydrogen storage and aligning with the localisation drive for hydrogen equipment.
Shanghai Hyfun undertook a sub-project task, targeting a hydrogen production scale of 18 t/h and a storage scale of ≥96 mt, to study gaseous high- and low-pressure storage strategies and their economics, and to establish a cost-evaluation model. This effort fills the technical gap between green hydrogen storage and wind-and-solar-powered hydrogen production, laying a solid technical foundation for large-scale hydrogen storage applications.
The acceptance panel comprised seven authoritative experts from the municipal commission, industry bodies, universities, and enterprises. After document review and technical questioning, the panel unanimously endorsed the project's results and application value and approved its acceptance.
