Altmin’s lithium refinery in Brazil becomes first Indian project to be listed with MSP

Published: Sep 9, 2025 07:10
In September 2025, India’s Altmin announced that its lithium refinery project in Brazil has become the first Indian project to be listed under the Mineral Security Partnership (MSP) — an international initiative led by the United States with participation from 14 countries. The project was submitted by India’s Ministry of Mines in 2023 and officially approved in August 2025, marking a significant step for India in building an independent lithium supply chain and securing its position in the global critical minerals landscape. Altmin has acquired a lithium refinery and proprietary refining technology in Brazil — the only such facility of its kind outside of China — capable of processing spodumene into multiple high-purity lithium products. This move is expected to challenge China's dominance in lithium refining and support India’s efforts to develop a domestic lithium-ion battery supply chain under the “Make in India” initiative. Altmin stated that the project will enhance India’s self-reliance in its green energy transition and facilitate its first major cooperation with Brazil in the critical minerals sector. The MSP listing also strengthens India’s global recognition and opens new opportunities for international collaboration in sustainable mineral supply chains.
