【SMM Steel】Ansteel Launches Green Hydrogen Steel Trial at Bayuquan Plant

Published: Sep 2, 2025 16:57

【SMM Steel】Anshan Iron and Steel Group (Ansteel Group) has initiated continuous trial operation of a hydrogen-based steel production line at its Bayuquan facility. The innovative process utilizes green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity to replace traditional coke in ironmaking, achieving near-zero carbon emissions.

Developed in collaboration with 64 domestic partners using entirely Chinese-made equipment, the pilot line has successfully produced direct reduced iron (DRI) with a metallization rate reaching 95%. Academician Li Can of the Chinese Academy of Sciences emphasized the technology's potential to establish China's leadership in hydrogen metallurgy.

The project represents a critical step toward scaling up to an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons.
