China's Nuclear Power Scale Surges to World's Top Spot, Blue Book Reveals

The China Nuclear Energy Association today (April 27) released the blue book "China Nuclear Energy Development Report 2025". According to the blue book, as of now, China has a total of 102 nuclear power units in operation, under construction, and approved for construction, with a total installed capacity reaching 113 million kW. The overall scale of nuclear power in China has surged to first place in the world for the first time. Currently, China has 28 nuclear power units under construction, with a total installed capacity of 33.65 million kW. The installed capacity of units under construction has maintained first place globally for 18 consecutive years. China's commercially operated nuclear power units have reached 58, with a total installed capacity of 60.96 million kW. In addition, China's nuclear power generation has also continued to grow. In 2024, the cumulative power generation of nuclear power units in operation nationwide reached 444.7 billion kWh, accounting for 4.72% of the country's total power generation, ranking second globally. This is equivalent to reducing the combustion of 127 million mt of standard coal and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 334 million mt.
