on February 13, the SMM 8-12% high-grade NPI average price was 960.5 yuan/mtu (ex-factory, tax included), up by 4 yuan/mtu from the previous working day. Supply side, domestically, Philippine nickel ore prices remained stable, while domestic smelters continued to operate at a loss, with production slightly recovering after seasonal maintenance. In Indonesia, overall production decreased in February, coupled with adjustments in production in a major region, leading to a slight decline in total output. Demand side, the stainless steel market has not fully recovered after the Chinese New Year holiday, with poor stainless steel sales and sluggish raw material procurement sentiment among steel mills. Some traders held strong expectations for the market outlook, with active inquiries and robust market sentiment. Amid tightening availability of marketable resources, high-grade NPI prices are expected to fluctuate upward in the short term.

[SMM Flash News] Rumors of Centralized State Export House Rattle Markets Ahead of Presidential Address
Market rumors ahead of tomorrow’s presidential address suggest Indonesia may establish a specialized state agency to centralize strategic commodity exports, initially targeting CPO and coal, with minerals under discussion. Under the rumored framework, producers would bypass direct international sales and sell to this state trading entity, which would export globally and potentially capture a trading spread. While the official narrative focuses on curbing under-invoicing, securing state revenue, and retaining foreign exchange to defend the rupiah, the market treats this as a major policy risk.

[SMM Flash News] Indonesia’s ESDM Suspends Over 50 Mining Licenses (IUPs) Over Delayed 2026 RKAB Submissions
Following three consecutive warning letters, Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has suspended more than 50 mineral and coal mining licenses (IUPs), including 34 nickel operations, for failing to submit their 2026 Work Plans and Budgets (RKAB). Tri Winarno, ESDM’s Director General of Minerals and Coal, stated on May 18 that the affected miners have been given a strict 90-day grace period to rectify their filings, after which non-compliance will lead to the permanent revocation of their mining licenses as the state tightens sector oversight.
