The United States and Mexico announced new measures on Wednesday (July 10) to crack down on China's practice of bypassing U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs by exporting products from Mexico to the United States, aiming to keep Chinese-made steel and aluminum products out of the U.S. market while protecting domestic production.

In a statement, the White House said that under a new policy implemented by President Biden, U.S. Section 232 tariffs of 25% will be imposed on steel imports from Mexico unless there is documentation showing that the steel was melted and poured in Mexico, the United States or Canada.

Similarly, aluminum products imported from Mexico will be subject to 10% tariffs under Section 232 unless they do not contain primary aluminum smelted or cast in countries such as China.
