SMM News on February 27th:
According to publicly available data, as of February 26th, 2024, Indonesia has approved a quota of 145 million wet metric tons of nickel ore (for 2024). It is understood that previously, the quota for nickel ore was approved on an annual basis. Now it is divided into two categories: if the mine is in the exploration stage, the quota is approved annually, and if the mine is already in operation, it can be approved every three years, with a single report covering three years of quota. Therefore, under the new system, the approval speed for nickel ore quotas has also slowed compared to previous years. According to SMM estimates, the total consumption of nickel ores for nickel products in Indonesia in 2024 is expected to be 241 million wet metric tons. Thus, the currently approved nickel ore quota accounts for 60% of the demand, and it is expected that the subsequent approval volume will continue to increase, with the proportion gradually expanding.
