Aerobal, the international organisation representing aluminium aerosol cans manufacturers, has reportedly announced the winners of the industry’s prestigious competition, ‘World Aluminium Aerosol Can Award 2023’.
Nivea’s pearl & beauty antiperspirant, produced by the German can manufacturer Tubex, won the award for the category ‘cans already on the market’. The fascinating design and eye-catching colour scheme of the packaging brought the award. The can evokes a luxurious charm because of its dark aubergine colour with a translucent effect, enabling the reflection of aluminium. The pearl printed on the can in the finest gradients is another flavour of richness to the packaging. This unique colour scheme proves that lighter colour is not contaminated with the darker hue and that the dark background does not suppress the fine details of a design.
The winner of the next category ‘prototype’ is the smart sustainable aerosol can produced by Nussbaum in cooperation with an Italian coating manufacturer Salchi Metalcoat Srl. This can is manufactured from 100 per cent aluminium sourced from use beverage can waste, and so, it perfectly represent sustainability but without compromising on performance, safety and durability. The clear and white basecoat and the clear overprint varnish from Salchi's BIOMOCO line on the can also takes the product a little more closer to sustainability because the coatings are made from castor oil and waste cooking oil, partially replacing conventional fossil materials.
In the ‘Sustainability category’, the German manufacturer Linhard is the winner for designing Lornamead CD deodorants’ cans. The cans are made of 17 per cent lighter slug and contain an alloy with 100 per cent post-consumer recycled aluminium and 0.3 per cent virgin manganese. The product saves 296.5 tonnes of CO2 per million cans produced because of being made using post-consumer recycled aluminium and minimising material use. The cans are also lighter in weight which also saves on transport emissions.
The jury also voted the aluminium can produced by Tubex Germany for Nivea’s styling mousse under ‘Sustainability’ category. This can is made with 50% real-PCR and is printed with natural colours. The product also demonstrates a closed-loop concept for being made of recycled material and ensuring stewardship of the raw material. Through this packaging, Tubex proves that sustainability and good looks can go hand in hand.
Aerobal Secretary General Gregor Spengler is completely satisfied with this year’s evaluation. And that makes me very confident for the future because aluminium aerosol cans not only have just one ace up their sleeve compared to other packaging materials due to their numerous positive properties of the metal in terms of sustainability. In addition, the continuous investments and innovations of our industry ensure that the position of the aluminium aerosol can as a sustainable packaging solution of the future will continue to develop positively."
