Sodium ion battery is not a new battery technology. This concept was first put forward in the 1970s and is still in the early stages of industrialization.
This technology has three main advantages:
1. Rich in resources. The crustal abundance of sodium ions is about 2.36%, much higher than 0.002% of lithium ions. In addition, the distribution of global lithium reserves is mainly concentrated in Chile, Australia and Argentina, which is extremely uneven. on the contrary, all countries can use seawater to prepare sodium salt, and the distribution of sodium resources is uniform.

However, sodium ion battery still has some disadvantages: 1. The energy density is low. From the perspective of application prospect, Guangfa Securities Yin central team predicts that the potential demand for sodium ion batteries in China will be 123 GWh, in 2025, which is measured by the price of lithium iron phosphate batteries, corresponding to a market space of about 53.7 billion yuan.
Citic Securities, Guotai Junan and Huajin Securities all said that they are optimistic about the application of sodium ion batteries in energy storage. It is believed that this technology is expected to be commercialized in scenarios with low energy density, such as energy storage, construction machinery, communication base stations, two-wheelers, and so on. It forms a certain supplement to mature energy storage technologies such as lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries.
It is worth mentioning that on July 23, in the guidance for the development of new energy storage, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Energy Bureau proposed to speed up the large-scale test and demonstration of sodium ion batteries and other technologies.
In terms of power batteries, due to the disadvantage of energy density, sodium ion batteries are difficult to meet the mileage requirements of power batteries, so they are less competitive than lithium batteries.
