Gan Yong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, suggested the establishment of a national titanium alloy technology research institute in Panxi region.

According to SMM, Sichuan trip, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, opened in Chengdu in 2021. Gan Yong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the National New Materials Industry Development expert Advisory Committee, suggested that a national titanium alloy technology research institute be established in Panxi region.

Gan Yong said that at present, China has become a big country in the titanium industry, but there are still bottlenecks to be broken through in important application fields. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in the comprehensive utilization of vanadium and titanium resources in Panxi, which has not only overcome the worldwide problem of smelting high-titanium vanadium-titanium magnetite in ordinary blast furnaces, but also broken the assertion of foreign experts that it is impossible to smelt with blast furnaces. It has turned the "dead ore" into economic resources, and independently developed a series of core processes and technologies in the vanadium industry, making China a vanadium importing country into a vanadium exporter and a major vanadium producer in the world. In addition, Panzhihua Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. has created a precedent for the recovery and utilization of titanium resources in vanadium-titanium magnetite, changed the map of world titanium resources, and formed a full-process titanium industry chain based on Panxi resources.
